How courier bag sizes are measured

Courier bag sizes are given as width x height in inches, measured flat across the outside of the bag. The height does not include the sealing flap, so a 10 x 12 inch bag gives you a 10 inch wide, 12 inch deep pocket to pack into.

Because a bag wraps around your product, the product needs to be smaller than the bag. A folded item also gains thickness, and thickness eats into both the width and the height once the bag is closed.

Measure your product in three steps

  • Pack the product exactly as you will ship it — folded, in its poly sleeve or inner box.
  • Lay it flat and measure the width and length in inches.
  • Add roughly one inch to the width and two inches to the height, then pick the nearest bag at or above that size. The extra room lets the flap close flat so the seal holds along its full width.

When you are between two sizes

Go up a size if the product is thick or rigid, such as a folded hoodie or a boxed item, because thickness shortens the usable length. Go down a size for thin, flat items like a single t-shirt or a book, since a loose bag lets the product slide and looks untidy on arrival.

Courier charges are based on weight or volume, so the smallest bag that closes cleanly is usually the cheapest to ship. If you ship many different products, most sellers settle on two or three sizes that cover their range rather than stocking all thirteen.

Still not sure?

Buy a single pack of the size you think fits and test it with your own products before ordering in bulk — there is no minimum order on plain bags. Or tell us what you ship through the quote form and we will recommend a size.
